The Power of Words - An understanding

Words have more power than we customarily attribute to them. They go forth with a vibration that can be uplifting, comforting, healing, encouraging or depressing, antagonistic, damaging, discouraging. Whatever the level of vibration, it goes out into space and lingers there, affecting the atmosphere surrounding us. You have probably experienced this. Therefore, if you want to produce goodness in your world, it is important that the words you speak and thoughts you engage reflect that quality.

Words do more than convey information. The power of our words can actually destroy one’s spirit, even stir up hatred and violence. They not only incite wounds but inflict them directly. Of all the creatures on this planet, only man has the ability to communicate through the spoken word.

Words are powerful. They communicate; they deliver information, express feelings, inspire others, give guiding protection, teach, and so forth. It is amazing that “mere puffs of wind should allow men to discover what they think and feel, to share their attitudes and plans, to anticipate the future and learn from the past, and to create lasting works of art.

Words can kill or heal your soul. Most assuredly, you can think of probably a handful of comments that you have never forgotten. You have never forgotten them because words are powerful. Words used against another can cause a wound that is difficult to erase.

Words do shape your attitudes. Your thoughts and attitudes do evolve into either positive or negative feelings. Negative feelings perpetuate the momentum of gossip, slander, and revengeful behavior. How you think and the words you use, or refrain from using on a daily basis has a profound impact on the course of daily living. You can feel bitter or peaceful inside all by the words you choose to think and speak.

If words can hurt, they can also heal. Think of the four words, "I have a dream." The moment they enter your mind, you know who said them -- and why. They are a call to action and a call to find the best part of ourselves. They are a part of history. While the person who originally spoke them may be no more, the words live on with a capacity to change the world through all those who embrace them. Words are definitely more powerful than guns.

Think of other particularly powerful words: thank you; I'm sorry; I love you; hope; trust; courage; peace. It is through words that we create our lives and our world, that we choose what to pay attention to and make real.
