Do you want to be Happy?

Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.

- Marcus Aurelius

Being poor means something different to each of us depending on our previous experience, expectations, and how much money people around us have.

In addition, if we compare ourselves with people who have less than we do, we feel more abundant.

Many currently rich and famous people had periods of struggling to make ends meet.

Appreciate Everything You Have

Are you really broke? Like living in your car or at a homeless shelter broke? If so, it’s probably going to be harder to feel better about what you have. But if you’re not, then really look around. Is your electricity on? Do you have food in the ridge? Enough gas in the car to get to work? Clothes to wear? If so, then relax and remember that a lot of people in a lot of places in the world would consider this to be a sign of wealth.

Look around you for every little thing you can be grateful for in your life. The main secret to happiness is to appreciate what you currently have.

Here are some examples:

-Health

-Food

-Shelter

-Friends

-Money, even if it is not as much as we would like

-Family

-Nature

-Creativity

-Kindness from others

Focus on all the positive things around you. Even if you don’t have much money, you may be rich in your own way.

On the other hand, if we focus on what we don’t have, we will feel unhappy regardless of how much money or possessions we have.

Be rich in mindset

It’s important to understand that a lot of rich people aren’t really rich. In fact, you might think that they have money simply by how they act when in fact they might be as broke as you.

People who are actually wealthy (in cash) might act stressed and frazzled, proving that being rich with cash may not be the best thing for everyone. Practice being appreciative of what you have and acting rich despite your circumstances. Be grateful for small things and not miserly in spirit. People who grouse all the time about having money, not having money or how much things cost regardless of how much money they have are boring. Period.

Stop acting like a broke person and be rich in spirit. If you truly desire wealth, then work towards that but don’t miss the little opportunities to appreciate your family at the same time. Be happy with what you have no matter what your circumstances and learn to live within your means.

Remember - Our Current Circumstances are Temporary

No matter how bad our life is right now, we will find a way to improve it.

For example, you will find a job or a better job, soon. You may come up with a good idea to make money, your business will take off, or the economy will change.

Something good will come out of these difficult circumstances. Keep focusing on the life you would like to live and how you can make it happen.

Visualization is a powerful tool to look beyond our current situation. Think about your next step. What do you need to do next.

  • Smile. Smiling can instantly boost your energy and make you happy without money.
  • Make friends. Having close relationships helps us overcome lots of difficulties. It gives us a sense of belonging and connection.
  • Dream. Imagine a happy and successful future. This is a very easy and simple technique to help you feel good. It lights up hope and optimism.
  • Take a walk. Walk stimulates hormones and gives the body energy through movement. Spend time outside. Even 10 minutes a day will make a huge difference.
  • Write a happiness journal. A study on happiness got participants to write down 3 things each day that made them happy. After 3 weeks, they found that their levels of happiness increased. Try it! It is easy! Use any writing mechanism you already have e.g. journal, email to a friend/relative, online, etc.
  • Give someone a compliment. Saying good things about others usually makes them do the same. If you want to attract compliments that will make you feel good, give compliments to others. The more you give, the more you get! And it is cheap!
  • Do a random act of kindness. When we are kind to others, we not only attract kindness in return, we also feel good about ourselves. Use every opportunity to be kind. Your self image will thank you.
